Reflection 21st Apr: Outcome

The Chinese ancients documented the origins of their philosophy with ornaments mainly made of jade and other different materials. The ancients believed that the emergence of the human mind was a gift from nature and that people of pure temperament would eventually become one with nature. They recorded their thoughts on ornaments by shapes, patterns, colours, etc. This kind of communication is also shown in the artifacts of different cultures.

The outcome communicated the idea of the unity of humans and nature. I tried to achieve this goal through patterns and colours. I imitate the texture of wind, water, soil, and plants, and used the conditions of the human body to get a better expression of these elements. For example, the wind is in the sky and it should be higher than other elements, so it is shown on the shoulder; the water is on the ground, so it is reflected on the leg; while plants need places to grow, therefore, I tried to portray a sense of they were growing out of the heart and reproductive organs.

Regarding the presentation, I was greatly inspired by researching Paola Anziché and Julien Creuzet. The textile sculptures in their exhibition are displayed in a suspended way, while people can also interact with Paola Anziché's hanging pieces. As the theme of my costume is to embody the ancient Chinese philosophy of the unity of man and nature, I can also allow the viewer to interact with the work and become a part of it by hanging it at a suitable height. I will also use photography to show the effect of it worn by the model.
